Launch Your Inner Child at Spacecraft

Williamsburg is full of artists. Every day, walking down Bedford Avenue, you’re confronted by posters, graffiti art, and talking heads–all the product of someone’s kaleidoscopic mind. And somehow, you’re left wondering, what happened to you? Has your desk or retail job driven you to think in black and white? 

Don’t be so hard on yourself…perhaps your inner child has just been trapped for too long.

But it’s time to let it out. And Spacecraft is just the place to do that.

Opened in October of 2008, Spacecraft is bringing crafting to the ‘Burg. After having children, owners Cristina Dodd, a former event planner and photographer, and Stella Metzner, a former fashion designer and stylist, needed an outlet for their creative dispositions. Inspired by Little Shop of Crafts in Manhattan, they set their sights on creating a space that would appeal to both children and adults. 

Now, I don’t mean to downplay the great activities for kids (the classes, the drop-in crafting, parties, etc.), but we all know that kids have no problem getting crafty. So consider this…what would happen if, for one night, you ditched the local bar scene and instead brought together your friends, wine, crafting supplies and a blank canvas? Oh, and I forgot to mention…that blank canvas is a pair of  underwear (clean, of course) for you to trim as you please. Just imagine the candid shots that would appear on MySpace and Facebook the next day.

I’m happy to report, this is one of several upcoming Valentine-themed, adult crafting classes that Cristina and Stella have planned. So start coaxing that inner child out and get yourself ready for crafting Billyburg style.

And, if, after your classes, you manage to get the crafting bug, Cristina and Stella have stocked the front of the shop with unique and hard-to-find craft supplies, such as vibrant felting wool. And because of Stella’s Waldorf schooling, you’ll also find some favorite Waldorf art supplies, such as Stockmar Crayons and Stockmar Modeling Beeswax.
